THUNDER CAR RULES 2010


DESCRIPTION OF CAR

Only North American cars or trucks allowed. Cars with less that a 108" wheel base and Cameros & Firebirds must use a stock 6 cylinder engine. No 4.3 litre engines allowed. Rear wheel drive only.

Rule will be reviewed at the end of the 2010 season

BODY

1. No gutting of car other than flammable materials in interior. Driver's door only may be gutted for clearance of cage door bars.

2. Firewall to remain stock and have all holes covered or filled.

3. May use mirrors. One rear view & one door mirror allowed (not to protrude past door though).

4. All doors must be welded or bolted shut.

5. Stock latching of hood & trunk lid must be removed & replaces with hood pins reinforced with large diameter washers.

6. Front inner fenders may be removed.

7. All body panels must be stock. Minimum 50% original material. Bumpers must remain stock with no reinforcing.

8. Missing body panels must be replaced by the next race weekend.

9. Bumpers must be strapped to metal body or frame with securely attached minimum 1/8" thick 2" wide steel.

10. Body mounts may be removed.

11. Windshield optional. May use windshield or windshield on driver's side only or an approved full-face helmet. Windshield must be made of Lexan and securely fastened to body. No plexi-glass windows allowed. Stock glass windshields allowed at tech crews discretion. Quarter windows of Lexan allowed for sponsors. No other windows allowed except on trucks which must use a rear window. This is to isolate the fuel tank area from the driver's compartment. Must have a vertical bar in center of windshield to deflect hood upwards in case of accident. Must be 1/8" thick, 1" wide steel. Two bars required if using a stock windshield. If no windshield is used, must use mesh for covering drivers side of window opening.
Rear window in truck not required if running a tonneau cover.

12. Radiusing and flairing of fenders allowed only for tire fitment, and must have edge rolled under, not out. No sharp edges!!

13. Late model after market nose and tail pieces allowed.

ROLL CAGE

1. Minimum four point cage mandatory. Must be made with minimum 1 15/32 O.D. .095 wall steel pipe. No exhaust pipe or galvanized pipe.

2. Must have minimum four door bars on left side (extending into driver's door) and two door bars on the right side. Top bar to be no more than 4" below top of door. Must have at least two rows of vertical bars between driver's door bars. One vertical bar between passenger door bars.

3. Posts must be welded to the frame or to minimum 16 square inch (4”x4”) 3/16” steel plates fastened to the floor with four ½” bolts. . Must have steel plate equal or greater size under the floor, with bolts going through top plate, floor and bottom plate.

4. Gusseting is recommended.

5. Roll cage supports can not extend past the rear firewall or center or rear axel.

6. Any and all bars that could come in contact with driver must have approved padding on them.

7. Rear hoop allowed for fuel protection only. Rear hoop must not extend forward of middle of rear axle.

8. Front hoop allowed but not to protrude outside body or past frame rails. Bars must be tied into frame ahead of firewall.

9. Side rub rails allowed. The top edge of the rub rail must be no higher than the top of the tires and no lower than hub center height. Rub rails must be made of tubing, maximum 1” deep by 2” tall. No gap allowed from inside of rail to body. One single rub rail allowed per side of car. Ends must be cut & capped at 45° angle (to prevent hooking of other cars).

10. Subframe connectors may be used on unibody cars.

11. Foot bar by drivers feet recommended.

SUSPENSION

1. Any springs allowed but must fit in stock location. Springs may be modified. Lowering blocks allowed in rear of leaf sprung vehicles.

2. Weight jacks allowed but car must be minimum 6" from lowest part of frame to ground, between wheels, with driver in car.

3. Rear sway bars allowed (factory only). Any OEM sway bar allowed with stock mounts. End link may be adjusted on one side (i.e. redi-rod may be used).

4. All other suspension parts must remain stock (from factory). Rubber bushings only except on sway bar end links. OEM or jobber clone parts only.

5. One stock type shock absorber bolted in the stock location per wheel. Non adjustably, steel body shocks only. No air adjustable or coil over shocks. No QA-1's.

6. Right front wheel may be cambered. Longer upper control arm mounting bolts allowed. Cars with struts, the right strut tower may be modified for camber purposes only and may be braced to firewall or left front tower.

7. Posi and welded rear ends are allowed. Mini spools are allowed.

8. No rear disc brakes allowed except where stock.

9. Skid plate on RF lower control arm is recommended. Must be minimum 8" long, 3" wide and ¼" thick with turned up ends. It must be mounted so it will contact the track before the rim or suspension.

FUEL SYSTEM

1. a) On carbureted cars with mechanical fuel pumps: stock fuel tank must be removed and replaced with an approved fuel cell or boat tank. Fuel cells equipped with foam are highly recommended (22u.s. gal or less) or steel boat tank (10 imp gal or less) may be used. Must be isolated from driver, trucks (full and mid size) can run either rear lexan window or/and steel tonneau cover over box. Fuel cells and tanks must be mounted between the frame rails and as far forward as possible maximum 6 inch from rear diff and Practical. Fuel cell and tanks must be in a metal case and have a minimum 8-inch ground clearance. If fuel cell or tank hangs below frame, a nerf bar must protect it. Nerf bar bust be lower that fuel cell. Nerf bar size must be 1 15/32 pipe or smaller.

b) EFI and carbureted vehicles with stock electric pump must use stock fuel tank with built-in electric pump, stock lines etc. and subject to tech crew approval. Fuel lines on cars with electric pumps must remain stock-no splicing in rubber hose etc. Stock fuel tank must have a skid plate under it. Must be a minimum 1/8" metal, the same size as the tank with sides open to allow spilled fuel to escape. Skid plate must be completely isolated from the driver. In order to automatically shut off the electric fuel pump in case of an accident, rollover, etc., all cars with EFI and with stock electric fuel pumps must use a Ford inertia switch wired into the fuel pump circuit and mounted to the left of the steering column. See the attached diagram.

2. Must have 4" hole under tank for fuel spillage.

3. Must have screw type cap.

4. Tank must be securely mounted to car with minimum 1" x 1/8" steel. TECH CREW'S discretion.

5. Must have vent pipe extending below the bottom of tank and on the left side OR an approved roll-over check valve.

6. No more that 6" of rubber fuel line in one spot with a maximum of 18" throughout the entire car.

NOTE: The tech crew will not tolerate improper mounted tanks. These rules are for everyone's safety. Any questions ask tech crew.

TIRES & WHEELS

1. Maximum 8" wide rims. No aluminum rims allowed. Aftermarket rim is mandatory on right front on V8 engine cars. Maximum 2" offset. No reinforcement inside of rims.

2. Tire’s to be run in this class will be USED Goodyear short track racing tire (wescar). However radial tires will still be allowed as per the following radial spec’s. Radial tires only. 60, 65, 70 series allowed. 14", 15" or 16" tires only. Must run all 14's, 15's or 16's. No mixing of sizes allowed. Tire stagger is allowed as long as all the tires on the car are either 14", 15" or 16". Tire size maximum P235. No recaps or industrial tires allowed.


ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

1. Engine must be stock with no performance parts except camshaft.

2. No V8's with fuel injection. No 4.3L engines allowed. No Chrysler 340 cid. No Vortex motors.

3. Any hydraulic, flat tappet or solid lifter cam with a maximum 500" valve lift allowed. No mushroom (custom ground) or roller camshafts permitted.

4. Minimum 74cc smogger heads only on 350 Chevs.

5. Maximum engine size of 367 CID Maximum 030" overbore.

6. Flat top pistons with four valve reliefs or dished pistons only. No pop ups. No forged pistons.

7. Exhaust to be maximum 2" OD with stock cast iron manifolds. No center dump manifolds. No crossovers.

8. No high rise intake manifolds allowed. Stock intake manifolds only.

9. Stock 2 barrel carb only. Maximum 1" adapter plate allowed. Total assembly with carb gaskets to be maximum 1 3/8". No spacers allowed. Not allowed to draw air from outside engine compartment.

10. No late model heads on early style blocks (center bolt valve covers).

11. No stroking or de-stroking.

12. Any stock transmission (make to make).

13. Must have all working forward and reverse gears.

14. Must use stock flywheel, clutch, torque converter, etc. for that model.

15. Aftermarket transmission coolers allowed. Rubber hoses to cooler must be doubling clamped and no longer than necessary.

16. Must have scatter shield such as conveyor belting over top of the bell housing to prevent a blown clutch from coming into the driver's compartment.

17. Engine must be mounted in its stock location.

18. Stock distributor and stock design ignition parts only

19. Absolutely no modifications to heads such as porting, polishing, port matching, roller rockers or angle milling. No marine head’s allowed.

SAFETY

1. If factory glass windshield or screen used, driver must wear either approved eye protection or a helmet with full face shield.

2. Must have a five-point harness.

3. Must use racing seat and must have head rest. Must be securely attached to the roll cage from the lower left door bar.

4. All cars must have a working fire extinguisher within easy reach of driver when belted in.

5. No plastic fire extinguisher mounts.

6. All cars must have a driver's window net. Window net must be mounted so that it falls down when opened.

7. Fuel tank must be sealed from driver's compartment.

8. No transmission coolers, transmission lines or fuel lines in the drivers' compartment.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

1. Battery must be securely fastened to car, preferably to the roll cage and completely isolated from the driver.

2.. If mounted in interior, battery must be either in a plastic boat box or metal box and secured with steel hold-downs. Battery must be covered and must have plastic or rubber over the terminals. Installation must be passed by tech crew.

3. Plastic 'boat' battery box may be used to cover battery but battery must be secured to car with steel hold-downs.

4. All switches must be clearly labelled and be located where safety personnel and driver (while strapped in) can easily reach them.

5. Alternators must be used and working.

Items not specifically covered in the rules are to remain stock. Any "grey areas" in the rules are to be referred to the tech crew. If you have any doubts-ask the tech crew first!!

Any equipment that the tech crew considers exotic or not in the intent of the rules will be considered illegal.
